Eric Davis’ mother Andrea passed away unexpectedly. She was his best friend and they were very close. In his grief after her death, Eric had the idea to use ChatGPT to have a simulated conversation with his late mother. He fed the chatbot texts from his mom so it could mimic her speaking style. When ChatGPT responded just like his mother, Eric burst into tears. The conversation provided some closure and allowed him to say goodbye, though he also felt it was inappropriate and “gross” to try to recreate his deceased mom with an AI. Eric was tempted to have more conversations with the ChatGPT version of his mom after that, but only had the one initial dialogue. The experience left him with mixed emotions.
